Vicenza

On Saturday we took the train to Vicenza for the day. It only takes about half an hour by train and costs 2.90 Euro each way. Naida and Ashok joined me for the day.

Vicenza is a very nice little city with a medieval character. The streets are small and there aren't very many cars so it is perfect for walking around and exploring. Vicenza is where the architect Palladio got his start and there are many famous palazzo there. You just turn the corner and there are more beautiful buildings, palazzos, and balconies with flowers.

The picture above to the left is in one of the churches. I found the pink color of the stone interesting and the guide book had some remarks about the diamond patterns. The picture on the left is of one of Palladio's Palazzos. I think it was supposed to be wider but wasn't finished. I think it is more notable because it is so skinny.

Above and to the left is the first building the Palladio designed. It is so beautiful with all of the white marble. Palladio was known for putting the statues on top of the columns. On the right is a statue of Palladio in the square in front of this building.

Above are pictures of the main square in Vicenza. There is a big float in the center that is a reconstruction of the float that they used to carry around the town. It is amazing that they used to carry around such a heavy and huge construction! The current government officials in the town are trying to bring back the processions and the event where they would carry this float. Possibly in a few years they will have them again.

The pictures above show the beautify balconies with flowers and the medieval street stands with people dressed up and selling hand made crafts.

After walking awhile we had to stop for some delicious gelato!
