Help from the Man at the Desk 9-5-10
On Sunday afternoon I hung around the dorm taking care of a few things including unpacking a little more and storing my suitcase at the top of my closet. I have a set of drawers underneath my desk. The top drawer has a lock and I would like to keep the medicine and random electronic stuff in the drawer just to make it a little harder to get to in case someone were to get into my room. I did notice that there were cleaning people in the dorm this morning. I don’t know if they go in individual rooms or if they just clean the public spaces. Anyways, the lock on the top drawer doesn’t work. When you turn the key on the outside the little latch is supposed to go up and catch behind a metal plate sticking down from the inside of the drawer. The problem is that the metal plate is in the wrong place so the latch can’t go up. The plate is just screwed into the top of the drawer so I figured I could easily unscrew it and move it just a little bit so that the lock would work. But, I don’t have a screwdriver. I tried a few small metal objects that might fit but that didn’t work. Then I went down to the front desk to ask if they had one I could borrow. There was a man there that I have seen manning the desk before. He doesn’t speak hardly any English. After doing hand motions for a screw driver and trying to explain it to him, he pulled out a dictionary. I found screw in it and he understood. He looked in his desk drawers and pulled out a small screwdriver that was bent at an angle and the point mushed. I went up and tried it but of course it didn’t work. When I brought it back down he told me he didn’t have another and that I could possibly get one tomorrow. Later on, I went back down to ask him where I could throw out some trash. He showed me the dumpsters out on the street. These dumpsters along with large recycling dumpsters stay on the street all the time and whenever you have trash you just bring it out and throw it in. I’m not sure what day or days of the week that they come to collect the trash. I’m sure I’ll find out soon enough when they are crashing around out there.
